Cognitive Analytical Therapy starter

CAT header

CAT sees the human experience as organised by social relationships. Relationship patterns are learned throughout life and are fundamental to the way we experience the world, often occurring again and again. We relate to other people (including to a therapist/client) and to ourselves in familiar patterns which can sometimes cause problems. CAT therapy is often offered to people who are very distressed and traumatised, especially if relationships are at the centre of their difficulties.

This course will give you an understanding of the way in which this relational model of therapy can be applied. There will be an opportunity to think about your own challenging work and/or personal situations using a relational lens, in small groups. This is not intended as a skills development course but aims to raise awareness of the CAT approach so you can decide to engage with accredited CAT training later, if you choose.

The training is led by Dr Cathy Amor, Clinical Psychologist and Senior Clinical Tutor on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme at Lancaster University. She is a member of the Association of Cognitive Analytic Therapists, qualified as a CAT Practitioner and teaches CAT on the Lancaster DClinPsy programme.

This course is aimed at people who have no previous experience or understanding of CAT and is at an introductory level. The use of jargon will be avoided as much as possible and no formal prior learning is required.

This course is delivered in 1 day by clinical tutors from the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Lancaster University who have worked extensively as clinical psychologists across a range of settings, and work hard to create a friendly and informal training environment in which to share discussion. The course costs just £135.
