Child and family work for aspiring clinical psychologists

Child and family header

In this one day course, we aim to provide an excellent foundation in child and family work using clinical psychology principles and skills, for both graduates and undergraduates aiming to pursue this career path. We cover core elements of child and family work in a CAMHS environment, relevant to people starting out or with some experience.

The course would suit any psychology graduate (or those approaching graduation) with an interest in finding out more about working with children, young people and families, and looking to develop their confidence and skills in engaging this client group. It aims to provide a practical foundation for ongoing training and experience, and will give participants the opportunity to consider issues specific to working with this population.

This one day course aims to provide an overview of NHS child & adolescent services & some of the clinical issues you may encounter in these settings, including information about referrals and typical presenting issues for both children and adolescents. It will provide an opportunity to hear about and discuss practical and creative ways to engage children, adolescents and parents, and to learn about common challenges and considerations for working with this client group. We will also look at working with the systems around children and young people.

The course will be delivered by clinical tutors from the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme at Lancaster University. The tutors involved have worked for a number of years in Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services, and other child psychology settings, and have experience as trainers. They work hard to create a friendly and informal training environment, in which participants can reflect on, discuss and, where possible, have a go at applying psychological ideas and skills relevant to working with children and families. The training includes case studies, small group exercises and didactic teaching.

This course is delivered in 1 day (running from 09:30 until 16:30) and costs just £135.
