Attachment Theory, learning disability and challenging behaviour

Challenging behaviour header

In this course we will be focusing on attachment theory and how it can be used to make sense of behaviours that are challenging to others. It is an ideal introductory course for graduates and undergraduates who would like to develop an understanding about how attachment theory can be helpful when working with people who have a learning disability.

WHAT THE COURSE WILL COVER

In this course we will be considering attachment theory and its application to facilitate understanding of why some people might engage in behaviours that are challenging to others. We will cover attachment theory and how it can be used with adults (with a particular focus on adults who have a learning disability). We will consider some of the assessment measures which are available and how to develop a psychological formulation to facilitate and aid understanding of why someone might engage in behaviours that are challenging using case examples to work through.

The workshop will be led by Dr Emma Munks (Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Senior Clinical Tutor on the Lancaster DClinPsy training programme). Emma is an experienced clinician and has worked with people who have a Learning Disability for twenty years in NHS and university settings.
